Writing Playlists

book, diary, notes-1869969.jpg

I call it a playlist, but the reality is that when I write, I tend to choose one song that fits the mood of the scene I’m writing, and then I put it on repeat. I get the feel that I want, but because the song is on repeat, it fades into the background and I can focus on the story.

Today as I was running errands, I chose a playlist I hadn’t listened to in ages. When the first song came up, I was suddenly hit with memories of sitting in my office. I was working on my first book Demon’s Bane. I always wrote late at night after everyone else was in bed. It was just me, my laptop, my music, and my tea.

Anyway, I had totally forgotten that I’d listened to the songs on my playlist while working on Demon’s Bane. But as soon as the music came on, longing hit me. Writing is hard, but it can also be joyful. Listening to my playlist reminded me of the joy I’d felt while writing. That feeling of being in the zone, moving forward, just me, the story, and the music.

I haven’t been listening to any music while working on my current book. But you know, maybe I should. Then when those songs come up again, I’ll smile and remember how much fun writing can be.

DEMON’S BANE Playlist

  • Secrets by OneRepublic
  • Made for Us by Mackintosh Braun* (This song reminded me most of Julian and Regina. I listened to it endlessly….)
  • Need You Now by Lady Antebellum
  • Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon
  • Brand New Day by Lindsey Ray** (This is the song I listened to when I finally typed: THE END.)
